Areas of Impact

Mapuche communities

The intention of this project is to contribute to resolving the conflict in a way that would bring recognition of the validity of Mapuche claims through a better inclusion of those claims in history curriculum for students in 5th and 10th grade. In the spirit of reciprocity, the Mapuche communities that participate in our project by generously receiving teachers from the capital will receive a gift of compensation in return.  The purpose of the gift is to cover a necessity of the school. For that reason, teachers from the capital, after the experience of immersion, should discuss the terms of this gift with their own school communities.  We expect this compensation to be between two to four thousand dollars.

Teachers’ own school

After the experience in the Araucania, participant teachers are expected to do two activities. (1) The first is to share their experience in the region with their students in Santiago, and including it in the topics of the curriculum that refer to Mapuche history. We expect to see an impact of this sharing in the students. In order to measure that impact we will conduct a study in two phases.  In the first phase we will survey students attending history classes with the participant teachers either in 5th or 10th grade. We want to assess their knowledge, perceptions, and opinions on the conflict. In the second phase, one month after teachers’ immersion experience, we will again survey the same students in the same aforementioned areas. (2) The second expected activity is to share their experience with their colleagues in a formal way (e.g. workshop, talk).  From this sharing we expect teachers to plan, with some colleagues or the school leadership team, the gift in compensation for the Mapuche host community participation.

Intercultural education Department of the Ministry of Education

We plan to structure this in-service teacher training experience with evidence of its impact into a proposal for the intercultural education department of the Ministry of Education.
